JJ News Desk

A bishop along with several others were allegedly stabbed during a sermon ceremony at a church in Wakeley, located in Sydney West, news agency Reuters quoted officials as saying. The incident took place on Monday night, the police have confirmed.

One person has been arrested and police are currently interrogating him to ascertain the reason behind the attack, Reuters reported.

Videos circulating online depicted a man lunging and stabbing a bishop, prompting worshippers present at the scene to rush towards the attacker in an attempt to save the bishop. Subsequently, the assailant begins stabbing the worshippers.

The wounded individuals, although they suffered non-life-threatening injuries, are receiving medical attention from paramedics, police said.

"The injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries and are being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics," BBC quoted a police statement.

Meanwhile, the police have asked people to avoid the area for some time.

This is the second stabbing incident in Sydney in the last three days, following after six people were killed in a knife attack at a mall in Sydney's Bondi area on Saturday. As of now, there is no suggestion that the two events are linked.
