Several areas in Delhi faced a power outage at around 2 pm on Tuesday. While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party blamed the outage on a fire at a sub-station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mandola, sources said a power generation unit owned by the Delhi government also faced a snag.

On Tuesday afternoon, power outages were reported in areas like ITO, Laxmi Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Jamia, Narela, Model Town, Rohini, Gopalpur, Sabzi Mandi, Wazirpur and Kashmiri Gate.

“There is power outage in many parts of Delhi from 2.11pm. This is due to a fire at sub-station of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Mandola, UP,” Delhi Power Minister Atishi said.

The AAP said that the national capital receives 1200 MW of power from the Mandola sub-station, and therefore the fire affected many parts of Delhi.

“The power restoration process has begun and electricity is now gradually returning to different areas,” Atishi said.

Atishi, however, said that the situation was extremely worrying.

“But this major failure in the national power grid is extremely worrying. I am seeking time with the Central Power Minister and the Chairman of PGCIL, to ensure that such a situation is not repeated,” Atishi said.

As of now, there are two versions of the power failure in some areas of Delhi. The Delhi government has blamed fire at Mandola powergrid for failure of generation of electricity at the Pragati Maidan power plant.

However, power grid sources say that the Pragati Maidan power generation unit, owned by the Delhi government, got a snag which resulted in the failure of Mandola Power station.

As a matter of fact, both Pragati Maidan power station and Mandola sub-station tripped almost simultaneously. The reason can be ascertained only after the technical investigation.
