Rajdeep Kaur (32), a US citizen originally from Punjab, was allegedly murdered by her in-laws in Nano Mallian village, Kapurthala. The gruesome incident unfolded on the night of January 19 and 20, and the police suspect the motive behind the murder was to claim the amount of life insurance.

Rajdeep, a mother of a five-year-old kid, arrived in Kapurthala on January 12, driven by her husband Manjinder Singh, who is now living illegally in the United States and hoping to obtain a green card. Her in-laws, Daljit Kaur, and Jagdev Singh, were arrested by Sultanpur Lodhi police for alleged complicity in the crime. Furthermore, Rajdeep's husband, Manjinder Singh, who is still in the United States, has been charged in connection with the case.

According to Babandeep Singh, DSP, Sultanpur Lodhi, "It is believed the woman was murdered as she had hefty life insurance coverage." The post-mortem examination report, received on January 23, cited "asphyxia due to smothering" as the cause of death.

The disturbing turn of events took an even darker twist when Rajdeep's in-laws stored her body in a freezer at Sidhwa Dona village for two days before informing the Sultanpur Lodhi police. The revelation of her death reached Rajdeep's parents, who reside in the UK, through a telephone call. Concerned about the circumstances of their daughter's demise, her mother, Nirmal Kaur, travelled to India and lodged a complaint with Sultanpur Lodhi police on January 25.

Rajdeep's family alleges that she was subjected to constant torture by her husband, who pressured her to transfer all her property into his name for immigration purposes. Nirmal Kaur, expressing her suspicions, stated, "My daughter was called to India based on a lie about a wedding. It was a plan to kill her." The family claims that Manjinder initially informed them of Rajdeep's death as a result of a heart attack, while another relative mentioned gas from a room heater as the cause.

Sultanpur Lodhi police registered an FIR against the in-laws and husband on Saturday, the same day the post-mortem examination report confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia. The unfolding tragedy underscores the complexities and potential dangers faced by individuals caught in immigration-related schemes, shedding light on the need for increased awareness and legal safeguards in such matters.
