'It's homogeneous society': Supreme Court to Tamil Nadu on Ayodhya live telecast

JJ News Desk

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to Tamil Nadu, saying that permission for the live telecast of the Ram Mandir opening cannot be rejected.

The top court said that permission cannot be declined solely because other communities live in a neighbourhood.

"This is a homogenous society, do not prevent only on this ground (that there are other communities)," the Supreme Court told Tamil Nadu government during Monday's hearing.

The order came after a plea was filed in the Supreme Court against an order by the DMK-headed Tamil Nadu government, which allegedly banned live telecast of Ram Lalla's 'Pran Pratishtha' in Ayodhya's Ram Mandir, in temples across the southern state today.

The plea further said that the state government had banned all kinds of 'puja' (worship), 'archana' and 'annadanam' (feeding the poor) 'bhajans' (folk songs) on the occasion of 'Pran Pratishtha' or Lord Ram in Ayodhya today.

The petition said that the order was a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed to Indian citizens under the Constitution.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai took to X to address the top court's order, informing the citizens of the southern state that "devotees of Bhagwan Shri Ram are free to telecast the consecration event live on an LED screen within any private premises and to give intimation only to HR&CE-administered temples".

"There is no ban on conducting Bhajans, offering special pooja or Annadhana," he tweeted with a video of himself.

The top court's order came after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the Tamil Nadu government this morning by taking to X and sharing a video of LED screens being taken down from the Kamakshi Amman Temple.

Calling the DMK party "anti-Hindu", she said that they are expressing their "hatred" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi by using police force and suppressing people's aspirations. Nirmala Sitharaman was scheduled to watch the live streaming of Ram Mandir inauguration from the temple today.

Meanwhile, Ayodhya has been adorned with flowers and streetlights, with several celebrities pouring in to the city in Uttar Pradesh since morning for the grand Ram Mandir inauguration. Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan along with his son and actor Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and south superstars Ram Charan, Chiranjeevi, and others, were spotted leaving for Ayodhya or landing in the city ahead of the consecration ceremony.

Former cricketer and legend Anil Kumble has also reached Ayodhya to attend the Ram temple opening.
