Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday apologised after his bizarre comments, almost in graphic detail, in the state assembly on the role of women's education in population control triggered a row.

Speaking in the state assembly about women's education yesterday, the Chief Minister used language that was described as "vulgar" and "derogatory" by the Opposition.

"Mai apne shabd wapas leta hu, humane yun hi ye bate kehdi thi... Mere bayan ka galat matlab nikala gaya... Maine to mahilao ki shiksha ki bat ki thi.. Agar mere banyan se koi aahat hua hai to maafi maangta hu (I take back my words. My comments have been misconstituted. I just talked about women's education. I apologise if my statements have hurt anybody," Nitish Kumar said.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while underlining the need for women's education to check population growth and how Bihar's fertility rate has dropped from 4.2 to 2.9 per cent.

On Wednesday, Nitish Kumar was denied entry into the assembly amidst protests by BJP legislators. He later managed to enter and said that his comments were misinterpreted, clarifying that he was only discussing women's education.
