A 21-year-old man was arrested in Gujarat's Rajkot for allegedly murdering his mother and later posting a picture with her dead body on Instagram, officials said.

The incident came to light when a local resident informed police about the incident and officials arrived at the scene to see the accused, Nilesh Gosai, sitting next to his mother's body in Bhagatsinhji Garden on University Road in Rajkot.

The victim, identified as Jyotiben Gosai, was 48-year-old.

Nilesh confessed to the murder during questioning, revealing that he initially tried to attack his mother with a knife. When Jyotiben managed to wrest the knife away, Nilesh resorted to strangling her with a blanket.

After committing the crime, he posted a photo of his mother on Instagram with a caption, "Sorry mom I kill you, I miss you, Om shanti (sic)." In another post, he wrote, "I'm kill my mom, loss my life, sorry mom, om shanti, Miss you mom (sic)".

After initial investigation, it was revealed that Jyotiben had been struggling with severe mental illness for years, leading to frequent arguments and physical altercations with her son.

On the day of the incident, a heated argument between Nilesh and Jyotiben escalated into violence.

Jyotiben's marriage had ended approximately 20 years ago, and since then, she and Nilesh had lived together, with minimal contact with her other children.

She was undergoing treatment for mental health issues, but had stopped taking her medication a month prior to the incident, exacerbating her condition, an official said.

Notably, Jyotiben's ex-husband and her other children refused to claim her body or take responsibility, forcing the police to file a complaint and arrange her final rites.

Nilesh is currently in police custody and further investigation into the matter is underway.
