An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was shot dead inside the premises of a Chandigarh court on Saturday by his father-in-law, a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police.

The former cop, Malwinder Singh, opened fire on Harpreet Singh while they were at the Chandigarh district court for a hearing in a family dispute case involving them.

Harprit had been posted as controller of accounts in the Ministry of Agriculture in New Delhi.

According to Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, divorce proceedings between the two families have been ongoing since 2023, and today was the fourth meeting at the mediation centre.

"Harpreet Singh along with his father and mother were present [for the mediation meeting]. The other side was being represented by the father of the girl, Malwinder Singh, a retired AIG from Punjab. Malwinder Singh fired upon Harpreet Singh near the mediation centre," Chandigarh police said in a statement.

The incident took place at around 2 pm and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he has been declared brought dead.

The accused was detained and his arrest was registered later, police said. The cops have recovered a pistol, four fired bullets, and three unused bullets.

Malwinder Singh has been charged with murder and offences under different sections of the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway, the police said.
