Delhi hit a historic milestone in its power consumption as the peak demand surged to 7717 Megawatts (MW) on Tuesday, marking the highest ever recorded in the capital's history.
This follows Monday's peak demand of 7572 MW, the highest for May afternoons, surpassing the 2023 record of 7438 MW.
Just hours later, at 23:37 pm, the demand peaked again at 7591 MW. The previous record stood at 7695 MW, recorded on June 29, 2022.
Notably, this marks the fourth consecutive day that Delhi's peak power demand has exceeded 7000 MW.
Several parts of north India, including Delhi, are facing extreme heatwave conditions in the past few days.
The maximum temperature on Monday touched 47.4 degrees Celsius in Najafgarh in the national capital, which was the highest in the country.
The peak power demand in Delhi may further rise in coming days as the weather department has said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were very likely in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, west Rajasthan, a few pockets of east Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh and isolated pockets of west Madhya Pradesh until Friday (May 24).
Heatwave conditions were also likely in parts of east Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch until May 24, it said.
