Delhi has recorded 228.1 mm of rain in the past 24 hours in one of the wettest spells the capital has recorded in June, causing waterlogging in several parts of the national capital. In the three hours between 2.30 am and 5.30 am, Delhi saw over 150 mm of rainfall.
The highest ever rainfall recorded in 24 hours at Safdarjung, the primary observatory of Delhi, during the month of June was 235.5 mm on June 28, 1936. The IMD is verifying the data to see if Friday's rain is the second highest ever.
Visuals shared by people on social media showed roads inundated and long traffic snarls in parts of Delhi.
Severe waterlogging on Delhi's Minto road led to vehicles being submerged. Trucks were also submerged in water at the Azad Market underpass.
Visuals from Connaught Place and areas outside several metro stations showed inundated roads.
The Delhi Traffic Police said the crucial Ring Road has been impacted in both directions from Naraina to Moti Bagh due to waterlogging under Dhaula Kuan flyover.
Waterlogged roads due to incessant rainfall in Noida and Ghaziabad also inconvenienced office goers.
A portion of the roof of Delhi airport's Terminal 1 fell on cars during heavy rainfall in the early hours of Friday, killing one and injuring two others.
As a safety measure, all departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily halted, and check-in counters closed.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds for the next seven days in Delhi.
