A woman was rescued in Bhopal on Saturday after being held hostage by her husband's family for 16 years.

Jahangirabad Mahila Thana police station in-charge Shilpa Kaurav told, the woman, Ranu Sahu, was rescued after a complaint lodged by Ranu's father, Kishan Lal Sahu, from Narsinghpur in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the complaint, Ranu was married in 2006. However, her in-laws hadn't allowed her to meet her family since 2008 and were harassing her. Ranu was even isolated from her son and daughter, Kishan Lal said.

Recently, the neighbours of Ranu's in-laws told Kishan Lal that her condition was deteriorating following harassment from her husband's family, after which he lodged the complaint.

Based on the complaint, a team of police personnel, along with the help of an NGO, rescued Ranu. She has been admitted to the hospital and further investigation is on, police said.
