Bengaluru: Meat transported on train seized amid suspicion over its source

JJ News Desk

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched an investigation into a suspicious meat shipment that arrived at Bengaluru railway station on Friday. The concern arose after officials noticed that the meat might belong to a different animal.

The food authority officials had earlier received a complaint about the suspicious meat shipment. Upon arrival at the railway station, FSSAI officers were dispatched to collect samples for testing.

There are unconfirmed reports suggesting that the meat could potentially be dog meat, but there has been no official confirmation.

FSSAI has taken the samples to determine the exact origin of the meat.

BBMP Special Commissioner for Health and Animal Husbandry, Vikas Kishore, stated, "Today, when the delivery arrived at the railway station, a complaint was registered with FSSAI. Samples have been collected by FSSAI to test which animal it belongs to. When this came to my knowledge, I immediately ordered an investigation."

This action follows a previous complaint received by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) regarding the quality of meat served at local eateries. The BBMP had already initiated an inquiry with the FSSAI based on these concerns.

Vikas Kishore, BBMP Special Commissioner, Health and Animal Husbandary, said, “The complaint was given earlier and enquiry was ordered. JD Animal husbandry from BBMP had visited the place and is yet to submit his report."

"Today, one of the social media posts brought it to my notice again, and I enquired about the spot inspection report and sent concerned Animal Husbandary BBMP officials to the spot. They are coordinating with FSSAI officials and police department to investigate it thoroughly and will take further necessary action,” Kishore said.
