Atal Setu, is “not a picnic spot,” Mumbai Police said in a social media post as it issued a strict warning and threatened to take action against people who stop their vehicles and take photos on the bridge. Also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Atal Setu is India’s longest sea bridge and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12.

Soon after its inauguration, people were seen stopping their vehicles on Atal Setu to take selfies and enjoy the sea view. Some, in fact, also made an attempt to access areas of the bridge that could result in fatal accidents. What’s worse is that people littered the bridge, as seen in pictures and videos that surfaced on social media.

Stopping on Atal Setu and clicking photos is “illegal,” Mumbai Police said, adding that an FIR will be lodged against those who stop on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

“We agree that Atal Setu is definitely 'worth a watch' but it's also illegal to stop on it and click photos. You will face an FIR if you stop on MTHL,” Mumbai Police said in their post.

Here are some pictures and videos that were made available on X by a page named Mumbai Matters where people were seen treating Atal Setu as a “picnic spot”.

Some people were also seen climbing the guardrails.

Atal Setu, a 21.8-kilometre-long bridge constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 17,840 crore, is expected to reduce the travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from two hours to just 20 minutes.
