Anmol Bishnoi, the fugitive brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was detained in the United States on Monday, sources told.
According to initial inputs, Anmol, also a dreaded gangster and wanted in India for several high-profile murder cases, was taken into custody in California earlier in the day.
Sources from the Mumbai Crime Branch said that after interrogating Anmol Bishnoi, the US authorities may first hand him over to Canadian authorities in connection with the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and then Indian authorities may get his custody.
Anmol Bishnoi, who fled India last year, became a key name in the criminal network orchestrated by the Bishnoi gang after his brother Lawrence Bishnoi's arrest. Anmol is wanted in multiple criminal cases in India, including the shooting incident outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan's residence and the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022.
He is also implicated in the recent killing of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique in October this year.
Anmol Bishnoi was taken into custody in the US weeks after the Mumbai Police Crime Branch unit initiated the process of his extradition. Anmol also faces two cases registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and 18 other criminal cases.
Recently, the terror probe agency announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for the person who will give information about Anmol Bishnoi that will lead to his arrest.
The gangster initially fled to Canada in 2023 using a fake passport. His criminal record led to a Mumbai court issuing a non-bailable warrant against him in July this year.
Authorities have linked Anmol to the murder of Baba Siddique, confirming his communication with the shooters involved. While two suspects in the case have been arrested, one remains at large.
Anmol was also involved in an attack on Salman Khan's residence in earlier this April, where he allegedly delivered a nine-minute speech to the attackers, encouraging them to "create history".
Anmol's elder brother, Lawrence Bishnoi, a key figure in organized crime for nearly a decade, is currently jailed in Gujarat on charges related to drug trafficking and violent crimes.
