Eight Kanwariyas were electrocuted and six others injured in a village in Bihar’s Hajipur district late on Sunday.

According to officials, the accident occurred at around 11.45 pm on Sunday at Sultanpur village under the Hajipur Industrial Area Police Station.

They said more than three dozen Kanwariyas, with a team of a disk jockey, were on their way to visit Pahleja Ghat of the Ganga River to take the holy water to offer at Hariharnath Temple in Sonepur. As the DJ vehicle came into contact with a high-tension wire, the Kanwariyas were electrocuted. All the victims belonged to the same village.

“Locals have complained against the electricity department for not responding to their calls to disconnect the power supply when the DJ vehicle was about to cross through areas with high tension wire. We are looking into the incident,” said Rambabu Baittha, Sub-divisional Officer, Hajipur Sadar.

Irate locals blocked traffic on the Hajipur-Jandaha road for hours until the Vaishali administration could clear traffic and take the bodies for postmortem in the early hours of Monday.
