22 coaches of Sabarmati Express derail in UP after engine hits 'object on track'

Twenty-two coaches of the Sabarmati Express, en route from Varanasi to Sabarmati, derailed on Saturday morning near Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, triggering panic among passengers. The mishap occurred shortly after the train departed Kanpur, with the derailment taking place near Bhimsen.

Emergency teams, including police and administrative personnel, are present at the site. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no casualties were reported.

Taking to X, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated, "The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today. Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it."

However, the route has been completely blocked. This section is a key route for trains travelling from Kanpur towards Mumbai.

Indian Railways has dispatched buses to the location to felicitate the passengers transfer to Kanpur.

According to Railways, Sabarmati Express 19168 derailed after hitting a boulder, causing significant damage to the engine's cattle guard.

The Indian Railways are currently probing the incident.
