The Telangana government has announced India’s first-ever transgender-specific government recruitment and social welfare program, under which transgender persons will be trained and recruited for traffic management.

As per the program, announced by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, once transgender individuals are identified and recruited, they will undergo specialised training to assist the Hyderabad traffic police.

The introduction of transgender traffic support troops aims to ensure smoother road management while empowering an underrepresented community with stable government employment, according to state government officials.

The government is also working on creating distinct uniforms for transgender recruits, with separate designs for "He/She" and "Him/Her" individuals.

In addition, the terms of employment, including salaries and benefits, are being finalised to ensure equality and respect for the recruits, officials added.

After training, the transgender troops will be deployed in Hyderabad.

According to the government, this move is not only unprecedented in India but is also a global first, aiming to address two key societal issues--employment for the marginalised transgender community and the city's traffic management challenges.
