The death toll in a bus accident in Nepal has risen to 27, authorities said, a day after an Indian-registered bus carrying 40 Indian tourists crashed into the Marsyangdi River in Tanahun district while travelling from Pokhara to Kathmandu.
The Prime Minister's Office announced on Saturday that the family members of those who died in the accident will be given Rs 2 lakh in compensation while those injured will be given Rs 50,000 from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
The initial death toll was 14, but it has since increased as rescue efforts continue. Sixteen injured passengers were airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment. The autopsy of the deceased has begun in a hospital in the Bagmati province on Saturday, news agency Press Trust of India reported. The bodies, after the autopsy, will be transported to Maharashtra.
Nepal Bus Accident Latest Updates
The post-mortem of the deceased is underway at Bharatpur Hospital in the Chitwan district of the Bagmati province.
11 people succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment, Deputy Spokesperson of Nepal's Armed Police Force (APF) Shailendra Thapa told news agency PTI.
According to local reports, the passengers onboard the bus were part of a group of 104 Indian pilgrims who arrived from Maharashtra in three buses to tour Nepal, PTI reported.
The injured passengers are being treated at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu.
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse will be travelling to Kathmandu to collect the bodies of the deceased and meet the injured.
