Missing Indian student found dead on US's Purdue University campus: Official

Neel Acharya, an Indian student at Purdue University in Indiana state of the US, has been confirmed dead. He was reported missing on social media on Sunday.

Neel Acharya, an Indian student studying at Purdue University in Indiana state of the US, has been confirmed dead, officials said on Tuesday.

Acharya, a double major in computer science and data science at the John Martinson Honors College of Purdue University, was reported missing on social media on Sunday.

In an email written to the university's computer science department on Monday, interim CS head Chris Clifton told students and faculty of Acharya's death, reported The Exponent.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Neel Acharya, has passed away," The Exponent quoted Clifton as saying.

Later, speaking to The Exponent, Clifton said that he received an email from the Office of the Dean of Students confirming Acharya's death.

Earlier on Monday, in a post on X, Acharya's mother, Gauri Acharya, sought help in finding her son who had been missing since January 28 at 12:30 (local time).

"Our son Neel Acharya is missing since yesterday Jan 28( 12:30 AM EST) He is studying in Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off in Purdue university. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything," she wrote on X.

Responding to her post, India's Consulate General in Chicago said, "(The) Consulate is in touch with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family. Consulate will extend all possible support and help".

Earlier last week, another Indian student, Akul Dhawan, an 18-year-old Indian freshman majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, was discovered dead.
