A 40-year-old Indian-origin man was awarded life in jail in British Columbia, Canada, for stabbing his wife to death.
British Columbia's homicide investigation team has announced that Navinder would not be eligible for parole for 10 years.
The sentencing took place on February 21.
"Incidents of intimate partner violence have a profound effect on families and communities," Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Pierotti in a statement.
“We're thankful for the great work being done by Surrey RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Victim Services and the Ministry of Children and Family Development who continue to support the family and the community,” Pierotti added.
The attack took place at their residence in Surrey, shortly after 9 pm on December 7, 2022.
Navinder was arrested on December 15 by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). He was charged with second-degree murder on December 16, 2022.
During the court proceedings last June, the lawyer argued that his client had made a mistake.
"He was very remorseful in court today. It's a very tragic incident, that's all I can say," lawyer Gagan Nahal said.
Her parents and brother, living in India, are struggling and concerned about the future of their grandchildren.
