JJ News Desk

An 80-year-old Indian-origin man, assaulted in eastern England while walking his dog, has died of his injuries. Police launched a murder investigation and have arrested five minors.

Bhim Kohli was assaulted while walking his dog in Franklin Park of Braunstone Town.

The attack occurred around 6.30 pm near the park’s entrance on September 1. Kohli, who was from Leicester, died a day later at a hospital where he was rushed to.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that he died from a neck injury, although further tests are pending.

The five arrested minors include a 14-year-old boy and girl, as well as a 12-year-old boy and two 12-year-old girls.

The 14-year-old boy is in police custody, while the other four children have been released with no further action taken.

Leicestershire Police is investigating the case.

“Sadly, following the death of the victim last night, this has now become a murder investigation. Officers are continuing to work at speed to establish the details of the attack and we have made a number of arrests as we continue to understand what has happened,” Detective Inspector Emma Matts, the Senior Investigating Officer, said.

Kohli’s daughter told LeicestershireLive that her father was just moments away from the safety of his home when he was attacked.

"He [Kohli] had a factory in Leicester making jumpers and cardigans but retired many years ago. He has two boys and a daughter, all grown up, and two grandsons. It's tragic what happened," said Kohli's neighbour Deep Kaila.

The police continue to appeal for any witnesses who were in the area between 6 pm and 6.45 pm to come forward.
