How small practices of ‘sustainable living’ can make big impacts on the environment

Bhumika Goyal

Our planet earth is facing major environmental challenges like climate change, environmental degradation, deforestation and pollution. The way we live and use our natural resources is a major reason behind it.  But instead of having these challenges there still is hope left for a healthier future which is sustainable living.

Sustainable living is a way to live which contains few practices, and conscious efforts taken by us as an individual in our everyday life to minimize our ecological footprints and ensure a peaceful coexistence with nature. The concept of sustainable living is a holistic approach which involves meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

The timeless concept of sustainable living is the 3 R’s with the help of which we can decrease the significant amount of waste from earth. By ensuring minimal packaging and ensuring reusable containers, bags and water bottles can help reduce plastic from earth as plastic is non recyclable and non-biodegradable. Instead of focusing on fast fashion try to reuse your old clothes or donate it to needy people and repair broken items instead of replacing it.

Sustainable Transportation

As transportation and fuel is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, we can try to commute more eco-friendly options for travelling.

Instead of using cars for covering even a small distance try to choose an active mode of transportation like walking or utilise public transport. As it will be good for the environment and your health both. If you must drive then choose fuel-efficient vehicles or carpool with others. When purchasing a new car consider electric vehicles or hybrids.

Embracing Sustainable Consumption

Support companies which are committed to ethical and sustainable practices. Look and purchase from brands who use eco-friendly material to make their product, use recycled materials, minimize packaging and have strong environmental policies.

Simple Changes in Daily Life to Promote Sustainable Living

  • Turn off light and electronics when not in use

  • Use energy efficiency LED bulbs and appliances

  • Reduce food waste by planning meals and using leftovers

  • Invest in renewable energy like solar energy which can power homes and businesses, reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

  • Avoid single-use plastics and opt for renewable alternatives.

Challenges in Adopting Sustainable Living

Initial Cost: some sustainable technologies and products have higher cost to install or to purchase, but they often lead to long-term saving

Misinformation: there can be confusion about what truly consists of sustainable practices, leading to “greenwashing” and misused efforts. As there is a lack of education in many areas and among people.

Behavioral Changes: shifting old habits and lifestyle patterns can be difficult for many people. As they are used to function that way in life.

Lack of Infrastructure: In some areas, the number of sustainable options is limited, like public transport and recycling facilities that can be a problem for many as they will be unable to adapt to a sustainable lifestyle.

Embracing sustainable living is not about perfection, but progress. Every small action from using reusable plastic bottles to support local farmers, contributes to a larger movement towards sustainability. As it will improve our quality of life and give us healthier food, cleaner air and deeper connection with the environment.

As Mahatma Gandhi said “The earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone's greed”. So let’s move together towards a greener, and sustainable future.
