Teen student hangs self in Rajasthan's Kota, 8th suicide this year

JJ News Desk

A 19-year-old student on Wednesday hanged herself in her rented room of a hostel in Rajasthan's Kota while she was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). This is the eighth suicide this year and the second such incident in the country's 'coaching hub' in two days.

The victim, Soumya, was a resident of Lucknow. She was attending private coaching classes as part of her preparation for NEET.

Her body was kept in a mortuary of the hospital and her family members have been informed.

Soumya's post-mortem will be conducted once her family arrives in Kota.

On March 25, Uruz Khan (20), a student preparing for NEET, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his rented room in Kota. He hailed from Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj.

Police were investigating why the student took the extreme step.

Last year, 29 students died of suicide in Kota while they were preparing for NEET.

In November last year, the Supreme Court blamed parents and not institutions for putting undue pressure on their children to excel in entrance exams such as NEET. The Supreme Court made the judgment while it heard a plea to seek regulation of private coaching institutes.
